Central Germany

General description
The region of Central Germany covers the federal states of Saxony, Thuringia and Saxony-Anhalt. In the wake of German reunification in 1990, the region has faced severe challenges regarding its economic development and demographic change. Being a largely rural and polycentric area cutting across state borders, Central Germany has not pursued a holistic development strategy. At the same time, this combination of challenges and the open regional development process provide an opportunity for lifestyle changes and motivate to think creatively about alternative ways of living.

Especially in the last few years, many initiatives were founded in and around the city of Halle which dedicate their time to various topics of sustainability and the question of how to realize a sustainable lifestyle on a local level.

Sustainability initiatives
In 2012, the action week “Heldentage” (hero days) – organized in the city of Halle – led to the linking of all the existing sustainability initiatives to utilize mutual synergies. The Transition Town Halle, consisting of around 300 supporters, was consequently created as an umbrella group for initiatives and deals with subjects such as local food production, food sharing, local currencies, community supported agriculture, non-violent communication workshops and open space art projects. Many activities carried out in Halle have a special emphasis on local and bio-dynamic food production.

The GLAMURS research project therefore focuses on both, the social movement of the Transition Town Halle as well as the attempts to set up local food production.
